Program
Sport as the motivating factor for school enrolment and retention.
Overview
Continued participation in DUNK sports requires children to be enrolled in school and to maintain or improve an average pass mark—linking sporting engagement to academic accountability.
DUNK uses sport as a motivating factor for school enrolment and retention among street-connected children and youth. The programme operates on a simple principle: continued participation in DUNK sports activities requires children to be enrolled in school and to maintain or improve an average pass mark. This creates a direct, positive link between sporting engagement and academic accountability.
DUNK works closely with the Ghana Education Service, private sector partners, philanthropies, and sports clubs to provide scholarships and financial support that remove economic barriers to school attendance. School report cards are monitored regularly, and an after-school support system is established at DUNK facilities, providing dedicated space, learning resources, and structured homework support to help students meet their academic targets.
The Equal Access to Education programme identifies street-connected and at-risk children through DUNK’s sports sessions and community outreach. Once enrolled, each child’s school attendance and academic performance is tracked termly using school report cards collected directly from schools or guardians. Children who are out of school are supported with scholarship applications and school placement assistance in partnership with the Ghana Education Service and DUNK’s network of private sector and philanthropic partners.
After-school sessions at DUNK facilities provide a structured, safe environment where children receive homework support, access to learning materials, and mentoring from trained youth workers. Sports participation remains the incentive for children who maintain their academic engagement to continue to access DUNK’s full programme offering.
